About ORBERA™ weight loss system
The ORBERA weight loss system is a safe and effective, incisionless procedure where a durable balloon is placed endoscopically into the stomach. The balloon takes up space in the stomach to make you feel fuller faster and help with decreasing your food intake. After 6 months, the balloon will be removed from the stomach and our healthcare team will continue to follow up with you regularly to ensure success with your customized weight loss plan.
The procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure and most patients are able to go home on the same day and return to work in 1-2 days following the procedure. For a better visualization of how this procedure is performed, please view the video below:

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Orbera help you lose weight?
The ORBERA weight loss system begins with placing a soft, durable balloon into the stomach. The balloon gives you a kickstart to losing weight by taking up space in your stomach to help you feel fuller faster, so that you consume less food without the feeling of hunger. The balloon is then removed after 6 months and our healthcare will continue to help you follow a behavioral modification program to maintain weight loss.
How much does the procedure cost?
The price of the ORBERA procedure is $8500, but is subject to change without advance notice. ORBERA is not covered by insurance, but our team will work with you on a one-on-one basis to help determine coverage for follow-ups and provide financing options that may be available to you. For more information on financing, please fill out the survey at the link below and someone on our team will reach out to you to answer your questions.
How much weight can I lose?
On average, patients lose about 10% of total body weight or 3 times the amount of weight lost by diet and exercise in the first 6 months. However, it is important to note that results will vary between each person. Committing to changing your habits and lifestyle will be extremely important to maximizing your results.
How is the procedure performed?
The Orbera procedure is a non-invasive, incisionless procedure performed while you are under sedation. A deflated balloon is placed in the stomach through the mouth while under visualization by a camera. Once the balloon has reached your stomach, it will be inflated with saline until it reaches the size of a grapefruit. The balloon stays in your stomach for 6 months, after which it will be deflated and removed through the same way it was placed in a second procedure.
How will I feel once the balloon has been placed?
The first few days following the procedure, you can expect to experience some side effects, such as nausea, as your body adjusts to the balloon. Dr. Raijman may prescribe medications to help with these symptoms. You may experience the most rapid weight loss results during the first 3 months following the procedure. The amount of weight that is lost will depend heavily on your effort to adjust and maintain your healthy habits.
Why choose Orbera over a gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, or other bariatric surgeries?
Orbera bridges the gap between taking medications and receiving more invasive surgeries, such as the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. Compared to bariatric surgery, Orbera is a reversible procedure that is less invasive, since there are no incisions or scars and there are no permanent changes to the anatomy of the stomach. The procedure is performed without any incisions or scars and most patients typically leave the hospital the same day as the procedure.
When can I return to work after the procedure?
Patients usually return to work within 1-2 days.
Will I need to follow-up with the doctor after the procedure?
After the procedure, our healthcare team will customize a lifestyle modification plan with you to help you maintain your healthy habits to retain your weight loss over time. Dr. Raijman will follow up with you via a telehealth visit 4 weeks after the procedure and it is highly recommended that you follow-up with a referred nutritionist for the following 6 months after the procedure.
What are the side effects?
You can expect to feel some nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, or discomfort as your body adjusts to the balloon in the body. While major risks or complications are rare, some serious side effects may result from adverse reaction to sedation or an intolerance to the balloon. If any side effects occur, our healthcare team will be available to you and may remove the balloon if severe complications persist.
